Multimedia Techniques

Multimedia has enhanced our messaging in so many ways.  One of the most significant ways would being that we can now receive and send messages just about anywhere.  We also have the capability to send messages through different mediums.  For example: there’s the hand written not, there are blogs, videos, PowerPoint presentations, podcasts, etc.  We have so many ways to send messaged nowadays thanks to the advancement in technology.  The question we face now is not if we can send the message but rather how should we send the message.  Thanks to these improvements to technology, we now have the ability to send messages almost instantly to any part of the world.

I believe that certain multimedia techniques can be more effective than others based on the situation or the message that is trying to be conveyed.  I do not feel that one is necessarily better than another however, I do believe that people do have preferences.  In addition, certain techniques can be more appropriate to use than others depending on the topic.  Some examples would include:

  • Business Meeting- I believe a PowerPoint presentation would be most helpful.  This way the speaker can highlight his or her main points while also adding visual interest to the meeting.
  • How-To’s- I feel a video would be best so that the viewer can not only hear but also see examples.
  • Leisure/Interest Topics- I think that podcasts would be great for leisure learning.  This way the listener can tune in during commutes, work outs, while running errands, or just relaxing.

Of course these examples can be subject to change based on the individual audiences.

My Homage to the Pioneer Woman

The Pioneer Woman, aka Ree Drummond, is a famous blogger, photographer, and food network chef.  She is married to a cowboy and lives on a ranch.  She’s seems to be a very sweet woman with a little bit of sass!  She’s very entertaining and makes some very delicious food (check out her recipes at FoodNetwork.com).

For me, a blog needs to be organized, visually appealing and exciting, and most importantly, fun to read.  If these three things are not up to par I can guarantee you that I will not read it.  In my opinion, I think that the Pioneer woman has balanced all of that in her blog.

Penn State Addresses Recent Death of Joe Paterno

Long time Penn State football coach, Joe Paterno, passed away at age 85 due to lung cancer.

State College, Pennsylvania- Jan. 22, 2012- Joe Paterno, the longtime Penn State coach who won more games than anyone in major college football but was fired regarding a child sex abuse scandal that ruined his reputation, died Sunday at the age of 85 due to lung cancer.

On January 22, 2012 at 9:25 am, Joseph Paterno died of lung cancer at Mount Nittany Medical Center, State College, Pennsylvania. Paterno was surrounded by his family at the time of his passing.

Paterno, the longtime Penn State coach won more games than anyone in major college football.  Paterno built his program on the credo "Success with Honor".  He was fired regarding a child sex abuse scandal that tarnished his reputation for winning with integrity.

Paterno's son had said in November that his father had been diagnosed with a treatable form of lung cancer during a follow-up visit for a bronchial illness.  Unfortunately, it was announced by Mount Nittany Medical Center that Paterno died due to "metastatic small cell carcinoma of the lung." Metastatic indicates an illness that has spread from one part of the body to an unrelated area.

Paterno’s family released a statement Sunday morning to announce his death: "His loss leaves a void in our lives that will never be filled."  His grieving family has requested privacy in this time of sorrow.

Social Networking Tools

This week we were asked to pick three of the social networking tools provided in one of the websites under the module resources tab.  My top three social media tools provided on the site were Blogs, Mobile, and Social Networking Sites.  My reasoning behind this would be the convenience, the accessibility, and the platforms themselves.

I picked blogs because I feel like if someone wanted to learn about something or get personal feedback on a particular topic, a blog would be a great way to find that information.  If someone wants reviews on movies, restaurants or how-to-do’s for cooking, do-it- yourself projects, or just about anything, one can find that specific information on a personal blog.

Another important social networking tool would be the mobile.  So many of us use our mobile devices to connect nowadays, I rarely have time in my busy day to actually sit down and research on my computer or any other device other than my cell phone.  If I cannot use my cell phone to access a website or any other platform, I will more than likely overlook it.  It’s not that I’m lazy, quite the opposite actually.  I’m just rarely stationary and I need my information to be just as mobile as I am, and I’m sure many would agree with me.

The last social media tool I’d like to discuss would be Social Networking Sites (SNS).  Not only are they easy to access, they are also multi-functional.  There are so many different SNS available right now.  My two favorites would be Facebook and LinkedIn.  I appreciate the fact that I can use Facebook to socialize with friends and family, find entertainment, and also use it for networking.  On the other hand, there’s LinkedIn, which is specifically for professional networking.  I like to keep that site more up to date than any of my other are because it has the most potential for improving my future while the others are mostly for entertainment.

Joan Rivers calls President Obama Gay!

Joan Rivers calls President Obama Gay!
Joan Rivers, a comedian best known for her cosmetic surgeries and hosting red carpet events, cracked a joke the other day regarding the President’s sexual orientation.  According to the Hoffington post, she stated that President Obama is the first gay president and that furthermore, his wife is transgendered.
Rivers has been known to take her jokes too far but that’s what keeps her material fresh and edgy.  I have watched her many times before on her television shows: Joan & Melissa (WE TV) and Fashion Police (E!).  That being said, I already don’t doubt that Rivers would make a joke like this.  I couldn’t find any references on the page, however, I did watch the video clip posted on the site, where Rivers calls Obama gay and further insults his wife.
Again, I did not see any sources on this page; however, I do find The Hoffington Post to be a reliable source of news.  The video helps as well.  Since I am a fan of Joan Rivers’, I can say that I am pretty sure this is something she would say, so I doubt the video was altered or edited.  However, if I did not know much about Rivers’, I may not find this article accurate.

Stories on SNS

Have you ever heard the saying “believe half of what you see and none of what you hear”?  Well to me it sounds like a math equation that just can’t ever be solved.  To me, I can only believe what I think I know if I learn information from reliable sources.  I can never actually know something unless it can be proven which is not often.  Usually, I stick with my reliable sources, whether it’s friend, family, or reputable news agencies.  Deep down though, one can never be certain unless they are involved fully in a situation.

I am not a very active user of Social Networking Site (SNS).  The one site I frequent is Facebook.  I scrolled up and down my newsfeed and I could only find one story and it’s quite salacious.  Apparently, there is a group out there called “Free the Nipple” which wants equal rights for women to walk around shirtless as men can.  Now, I’m all for equal rights but I’m also aware that we do not have the same bodies.  I believe that women should be covered and if they want expose their chests that there are certain places for that, but the public is not the paramount place as there would be many people who would be uncomfortable by it. As part of their campaign, they have created bathing suit bikini tops that are skin color that have nipples on them and therefore look from a far as if a woman is walking around without a top.

Of course SNS sites can be reliable for obtaining credible information, but not always.  Let’s face the facts though; most of the stories that go on SNS, such as Facebook, are for entertainment purposes.  This little story that I shared is interesting because it’s scandalous, and not much more.  This story isn’t the differences between life and death, it’s not going to affect the economy, start or end and wars, but it is going to make people double take because it’s a hot topic.  It makes people ask themselves if women are being oppressed, if the norms of society are outdated, and it certainly sparks conversation when we see celebrates such as Rhianna, BeyoncĂ©, and Miley Cyrus exposing their nipples.  Could it be that they are on board for the cause?  Or are they just trying to create attention and promote their work? (The picture on the left is of Miley Cyrus, sporting black nipple-looking pasties at the iHeartRadio Music Festival.)

Events and New Media

There are only a few forms of new media that I find myself using every day.  One of which is, of course, is the Internet.  In fact, since receiving my first iPhone in the beginning of 2011, I don’t remember going a day without the Internet.  I am not a very active user when it comes to Social Networking Sites (SNS) though.  For my first class at SNHU I made it one of my goals to get more involved with SNS.  Since then, I have joined the main SNS such as Pinterst and Instagram and have learned how to use them.  However, I do not use them on a daily basis.  The one SNS that I can say I may come close to using daily is Facebook and it is mostly due to boredom.
New social media has changed my perspective of events somewhat.  People are able to use SNS such as Facebook to invite others to events.  I have gotten invitations from people trying to promote their companies by inviting me to sales events, friends sending me invitations to parties, and I have also received general notifications regarding festivals in my county (ie. Greek Festival, local carnivals, wine tasting events etc.).  I still feel that a personal invitation sent to my home will catch my attention better than the Internet, especially since there are so many advertisements competing for my attention.

I suppose I would count this change in Events more as a positive effect than a negative.  It is easier for the event coordinators to send invitations and keep track of their guest list online.  By posting about the events on a forum such as Facebook, the other guests can check the guest list and itinerary.  It helps as well because the invites go out almost instantaneously whereas invites via mail may take a week or more.  Although convenient, invites via the internet are not always appropriate (ie. wedding invitations).
